Richard came to ReStore when he was unemployed, to gain experience and keep busy. He has since found employment, but continues to volunteer in store. Read about his ReStore experience below.

Why did you sign up to volunteer in ReStore and how long have you been a volunteer?

I have been volunteering since 2017 – hitting 3 years soon. I was unemployed and didn’t want to be doing nothing. I wanted to occupy myself until I found paid employment, which I since have (I work part-time at the moment), and I continue to volunteer in the ReStore. .

What motivates you to keep coming back?

The staff whom I really like.

What skills, qualities or experience do you bring to ReStore?

I am have retail experience and strong customer service experience. Also a bit of general DIY too.

What’s your favourite task?

Working on the shop floor and serving the customers.

What have you learned during your time in ReStore?

I have learned that more people are interested in donating and recycling than you might think and encouraging that and helping with that does make a difference.

What has surprised you about working in ReStore?

It is surprising to me what great stock we get donated.

What’s been your highlight so far?

The friendships I have made. That is by far the best thing.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met in ReStore and why?

The Donation Collection Driver Joe because his knowledge is vast and when we do the collections he makes the experience enjoyable. He is a real pleasure to work with.

What’s the thing that inspires you most about Habitat’s work?

That it is done for the most part by volunteers and that it is a good opportunity for people who want to work to do so and learn new skills.
